About the play
In Uomo e galantuomo, first written in 1922 with some parts “a soggetto”, we have a potentially tragic situation – arising out of the adulterous relationship between the Count’s wife Bice and Alberto – easily giving way to a grotesque and farcical turn of events when we learn that, paradoxically, the Count’s own unfaithfulness to his wife caused her to do the same in revenge and out of spite. The reality of the situation, which they have created for themselves, cannot be changed and, in the end, for the sake of social appearances and personal survival, of a kind, each must pretend that it doesn’t exist or that things are really as they merely seem to be.
